Any web resource you access can gather personal information about you through your unique IP address. They can monitor your browsing habits and log this information with your IP address.

There are 3 main categories of companies that are tracking what you do on the Internet. One is your ISP (Internet Service Provider). This is who you use for surfing the Internet. They have a log of all the web sites you have visited. The second are the variety of Internet search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN. They even go as far as selling this information to Marketing firms to better target your behavior. The final one is the company you are working for. Generally the IT department will track where employees are surfing to guarantee they are only using it to perform their job.

By using an anonymous proxy server you are hiding your IP address so these companies don't have the ability to track your habits. It is no one's business what you do on your computer.
