So what would a soldier want to access on the web. Believe it or not, one of the things they do is watch TV online. They can catch their favorite programs or watch hockey. Why would a benign site such as Hulu.com be barred in certain countries? Is it due to draconian censorship rules? Actually, it is really just a matter of finances. What is an IP address? IP stands for “internet protocol” and it is the coded numerical information that details what company provides your internet service and a general idea of your geographic location. When you log onto a website, information about your IP address is immediately transferred to the site. As such, the site will discover what country you are trying to access the site from. So, if you log on to Hulu from overseas, the website will block your access. That means an American traveling abroad may be completely locked out of accessing the site. Or, so it would seem. Actually, there is an option available and it is a very simple one. Those looking to access Hulu or any other restricted site might wish to look into an anonymous proxy system.

The way an anonymous proxy system works is relatively basic. This system essentially masks the IP you are using and replaces it will a different one. So, if you are trying to access the site, you can present it with an American IP address even though you are not in the United States. This means you will gain access to the site since it will not read a barred IP address. Again, it will be reading the anonymous IP address instead.

There is no reason to assume that because you are traveling that you will no longer have access to your favorite websites on online services.
