Shopping Online

January 31st, 2010

Do you remember a time, long ago in our past, when one had to go out to buy something and bring it home? It seems like a crazy concept, but it really happened. People drove their cars to a sort of vending center, where they exchanged monetary units for perishables and other items. They would then buy enough to last them for some time, and when they needed more, they would head back again and again. Someday kids will read about this very outdated practice in their history textbooks. All joking aside though, the idea that one would actually go out to a store to buy something is becoming obsolete. These stores have fewer users than they did fifty years ago, even with a larger population. The world of explosive technology has penetrated nearly every aspect of life, and shopping certainly under that umbrella.

People’s lives around the globe|world] today, especially those of the United States citizens, are of a highly mobile type. We use our cars to go anywhere, work a whole bunch of separate shifts to augment our bank accounts, and have more entertainment in our house than does a whole circus. Consider going out to the movies in the present day; in the prehistoric days, before the VCR player, you would have to buy a ticket for the theater playing at your time. Now you can simply download movies temporarily whenever you choose by taking your pick from an on-demand service. Our homes these days are like the best place to relax and have fun; it almost defeats the point of going out. This self-containment is a must today though because we have more going on in our lives than ever before.

Monitor Information Output

August 11th, 2009

People are getting on to these social networking sites more and more as more people join. Maybe it is a just a “jump on the band wagon” type of thing, but never the less, these sites grow exponentially every day. As the sites grow, and people continuously ignore privacy settings and other safety precautions on these high risk sites, more and more personal and sensitive information is posted to the World Wide Web. This information can be used for just knowledge purposes, but it can also be used maliciously.

These issues are highly unpublicized and for the most part, only privacy advocates are concerned with the matters. Most people are blissfully unaware of the privacy risk their social networking web page presents to them and everyone they involve on it. Some people are going to try and teach the youth (and truly everyone) how to properly protect themselves on the Internet and these sites.

Enter the developer called Six to Start. Partnered with a local news station they are developing a game designed to teach kids about privacy, without the “teaching” aspect seeming so austere. The game is called “Smokescreen” and kids will be able to use their privacy as a defense system; the more things and information you put out there, the less your defense will be. The game rewards them also for not completely shutting off their release of information. Sensible things to put on your blog page, like name and interests, and maybe just COUNTRY of location.

The internet is not the club it used to be. There are many more people using it, and some with bad intentions. It is more important than ever to be guarded online, and luckily, you don’t have to have a doctorate in Computer Sciences to do so.

One must always be wary of their ISP. The ISP has a meticulous log of all internet activity done while under them and every website has a log of every IP that visits them. By using an anonymous proxy, your ISP won’t have a log of sites you’ve visited because it won’t have been under them, and the website will log the proxy’s IP, and not yours when you visit.

A customer was experiencing difficulties posting advertisements on the internet. Every ad he posted was being ghosted. He went through the proper procedures required for using the anonymous proxy service, changed his ads and cleared his cookies, but he still had the problem.  He inquired if the servers were non-static and changing his IP address.  We checked to make sure the Private Proxy was working properly, then set about solving the mystery concerning his ghosted ads.

We recreated the conditions under which he posted, placing our own ads, which were not ghosted.  We examined each server for IP flagging, but all the addresses came back clean.

We discovered that the email address our customer used was the culprit. Other customers have reported similar problems, and their difficulties were the result of entirely different issues, such as their cookies.  There are many ways to track internet users.  We’ve compiled a list of suggestion on ways to protect your anonymous status online below.

As many devious people prowl the Internet and try to intercept exchanges of information, encrypted anonymous surfing is becoming more important on a daily basis. Because of this, the amount of people searching for the best way to become anonymous in their web surfing is growing everyday. US Military personnel are not exempt from this need to hide their identity and activities on the web.

The use of an anonymous web proxy can allow you to do more than just hide your IP address. It also allows you to have more freedom to explore websites that are restricted for some reasons, including government restrictions. Many schools, offices, organizations impose these restrictions, but our focus is on bypassing government censorship for military personnel abroad.
